Q& A Information regarding CPL New Member Training

CHILDREN & TEENS

Want to join Children's PressLine?

If you're between the ages of 8 and 18 and want your opinion heard, you can be a reporter or editor for Children's PressLine!

To be notified when registration is open, please sign up for the CPL newsletter on our home page.

We are free and open to all children who live in the New York City area. We hold new member trainings twice a year (Fall and Summer). Once you’ve attended a training session, you can sign up for a news team and get started.

As a member of Children's PressLine, you get the power to tell the world what you think.

All CPL stories present the youth perspective to tens of thousands of readers. CPL journalists ask kids and adults the hard questions and get their stories published in the mainstream media thereby compelling decision-makers, educators and ordinary citizens to pay attention.

Fact:  When kids are portrayed in the media today, it is often in a negative light. Furthermore, even though 26% of the country is made up of people under 18, only 10% of news stories focus on children's issues - and almost half of those portray kids as criminals.¹
You have the opportunity to change the public’s perception of kids and to contribute your opinions on issues that matter to you.
¹:Based on the October 2001 report, "The Local Television News Media's Picture of Children's," by Children Now (Oakland, CA).

COLLEGE INTERNS

Children's PressLine works with 10-15 college journalism interns a year. Preference is given to students who have college newspaper or professional journalism experience. Interns work as editorial coordinators will be responsible for managing teams of youth journalists as they research, brief and interview their peers around the world. By outreaching to youth-serving organizations, the intern will coordinate peer-to-peer interviews between CPL journalists and kids, activists and policymakers. Some transcribing and editing will be involved.

Interns will also be responsible for working directly with teen editors to engage them in the story coordinating process.

As projects develop in the office, intern will be responsible for independently managing aspects of an assignment. Interns will work directly with Youth Coordinator and gain and editorial management skills. Interns need to be able to work independently, understand the value of deadlines and have excellent research and phone skills.

Interns must be able to work a minimum of 12 hours a week during the schoolyear and 30 hours a week in the summer. Stipends may be available.

To Apply: Please send resume and cover letter to CPL at cpl@cplmedia.org with "CPL Internship" in the subject line.
