"You have to tell the truth, man. Whatever
is true in your heart, you can't keep that away. You gotta talk
it up, man. If you lose your faith for one minute, man-you're weak,
but it could happen-but you gotta hold the faith. And you can't
make nothing interfere with that. There's a better place than this
earth we're living on. And I want to get there." Preston,
19
"I kind of got forced into church when I
was a kid. But when you get older, you realize that it's kind of
important; when you're growing up in certain neighborhoods, church
is a good thing to have. You don't necessarily have to go to church
every day, but you have to still respect God and respect the things
He did."
Michael, 14
"The biggest problems that I've met haven't
been because I was a Gentile who converted to Judaism or that I
was gay, or that I was a woman, it was that I was under 18, which
is funny, because in Judaism, the age of consent--in a way--is 13.
Everybody else can sit at 13, but they didn't want to let me into
my conversion class until I turned 18." Laura,
18
"My mom used to pray on me, like literally
pray on me. She would throw blessed oil on me. It was crazy at first,
cause my mom is Pentecostal, and they're kind of fanatical about
the whole thing, you know what I'm saying? But I don't see any substance
in it".
Ayana, 16
When it comes to how they live their lives,
the future is now for today's teenagers. Their values, attitudes
and behavior - all reflect this new world they are propelling us
toward. But what exactly are those values and why are they spurring
a generation to proudly regard themselves as spiritual rather than
religious? Is it a desire to remain true to who they are rather
than serve the needs of social convention, or is it selfish individualism
and the dogged denial of a God?
CPL's book project, In Search of Faith
took four young journalists on a month long journey across
the country to meet other young people and engage them in a frank
and open spiritual dialogue. This fascinating odyssey of growth
and change will introduce America to its newest generation in stirring
and revealing fashion. Some of the chapters we're working on are
Faith and the Family, Rites of Passage, Dealing with Loss, Spirituality
and Expression, Dealing with Difference, and What If: Destiny,
Fate and the Future.
